Getting a paramedic license involves prerequisite classes, certifications and experience. In order to obtain a paramedic license, one must first earn Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) certification. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification is required to pursue EMT-B certification. Once both CPR and EMT-B certifications are awarded, the next step in becoming a paramedic is to perform the duties of an EMT for a least a year as a firefighter, life guard, ski patrolman or with an ambulance service. Then, acquire IV certification and take an EKG interpretation class. Finally, find a paramedic training program.

CPR is often taught as part of the health classes in high schools and colleges. CPR training through the Red Cross or other health organizations is, at the very least, inexpensive, if not free. EMT classes cost anywhere from $500 – $900 at community colleges. Depending on the school at which the classes are offered, though, EMT-B certification can cost up to $3,980. The EMT exam, which is not included in the cost for training, is about $70. The length of training is 3 – 6 months or one semester.

In addition to the cost of CPR and EMT-B certification classes as well as the exams to become certified, paramedic training and licensing costs up to $15, 730. This varies depending upon the program. Different programs have different requirements. For example, some may require Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology classes and some may only require college level biology and math. Most programs include certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pre-Hospital Life Support, as well as other certifications.

This does not include the cost of books for each class in the program, The national paramedic exam, which costs $110, is considered very difficult, so a book or an on line subscription to a test preparation website that assists in preparing for the exam is also highly recommended, if not absolutely necessary. EMT-B and Paramedic exam preparation books cost about $20. Website subscriptions can cost up to $100 to prepare for the national paramedic exam. If it is not passed the first time, the test must be taken again for another $110. It is best to be fully prepared the first time.

If one is employed as an EMT firefighter, the cost of classes may be partially or completely covered. Other employment as an EMT may offer help with tuition, as well. Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics earn approximately $29,330 a year.
